ABOUT  THE SIDE SHOW​

Celebrating Musical Theatre’s Supporting Characters The Side Show is a vibrant cabaret spotlighting the characters who usually live just outside the spotlight. From loyal best friends to scene-stealing comic relief, this show celebrates the unforgettable supporting roles of musical theatre.

 

We are seeking 6 performers and 1 MC to bring this concept to life.

ABOUT ESCAPEES THEATRE COMPANY

We are a not-for-profit, unique, innovative and hard-working theatre company based in the South East of Melbourne who have predominantly created theatre performances, both original and re-imaginations, since 2007. We are an inclusive group with a flair for the dramatic and a deep appreciation of a good pair of jazz hands. We entertain our community through theatre and strive to make the arts available to all. 

 

The Escapees Theatre Company prides itself on being an inclusive space for people of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, identities, genders and people who are neurodiverse. We acknowledge for many individuals, gender identity and presentation is a vast spectrum. If you are wanting to audition for a role that you may believe to be traditionally played by a set gender or appearance please don’t be hesitant in your audition choice as we are open to all possibilities within our licensing rights. REHEARSALS & COMMITMENT REQUIREMENTS

Rehearsals start Sunday the 10th of May

Sundays - 9am - 12pm - Beaconsfield Upper

Tuesdays 7:30pm - 10:30pm - Pakenham

Sitz Probe Sunday 26th of July - Time TBA

Whilst we acknowledge that cast have commitments outside of the production which may present challenges,

the company also has an expectation that sufficient measures have been taken to ensure that cast are present and on time

for dates during rehearsal season. This is not only a mark of respect for the crew and fellow cast members, but is also a matter of
occupational health and safety. Failure to provide sufficient notice to production teams of potential missed dates or lateness may result in being removed from certain numbers, or in extreme circumstances, be removed from the show.

Show Fees:
Please note that there is a show fee of $110 will be taken at the start of the rehearsal period this

fee will help cover production costs and includes a Side Show T-shirt for all cast members.
We want to offer this opportunity to everyone and we understand money can be a difficult

hurdle. Please know we are very open to extending due dates and working out payment
plans. The show fee should not be the reason you don’t audition. Please contact us with any
concerns you might have.

AUDITION BOOKINGS

Auditions will be held on ​Friday 1st of May 7pm - 10pm Saturday 2nd of May 9am - 12pm in Beaconsfield Upper.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for a role, auditionees must be over 18 years of age.

Available Roles

3 Male Performers

3 Female Performers

1 MC / Host

 

All performers must prepare:

1 Ballad from a musical theatre repertoire

1 Upbeat Musical Theatre Song

 

Songs should ideally be associated with supporting or character roles, or capture the spirit of a scene-stealing side character.

 

Song Guidelines:

Each selection should be no longer than 2 minutes

Please bring backing track - we will have a speaker available

Be prepared to briefly introduce your songs

 

We are looking for performers with strong storytelling ability, comedic timing, and big character energy.

MC / Host Audition Requirements

The MC will guide the audience through the evening, introduce acts, and keep the energy high.

 

Please prepare:

1 Musical Theatre Ballad (maximum 2 minutes)

1 Short Comedic Monologue (Max 1 minute)

 

The monologue should showcase personality, wit, and strong audience engagement.

 

What We’re Looking For

Strong vocal ability

Character-driven performers

Comedic instincts and stage presence

Performers comfortable in a cabaret-style, audience-facing environment

 

AUDITION DISCLAIMER

The audition panel consists of two representatives of the committee/production team.

No member of the audition panel will themselves be auditioning for the show.

The company prides itself on casting on auditionee merit, and as such have included the third party panellist as a way to demonstrate our full transparency in the process.​
