Escapees Theatre Company will be presenting The Wedding Singer in agreement with
MTI and Hal Leonard at the Drum Theatre, Dandenong in October 2021.
It's 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Heart, who still lives in his grandmother's basement, is New Jersey's favorite wedding singer. He's the life of the party until his fiance, Linda, leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie is so distraught that he makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. The only trouble is that Julia is about to be married to Wall Street shark Glen, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. With a score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980s, The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just have been the coolest guy in the room.
Audition Requirements & Submission
First round auditions will be held virtually with submitted pre-recorded videos.
What you’ll need to include in the video:
A personal introduction, tell us a little about yourself if you haven’t done a show with us before.
A monologue of no longer than 2 minutes in length. This should be performed in a General American, New Yorker or New Jersian accent (any are acceptable). Something in the style of the show (not from The Wedding Singer) is best.
A musical theatre song in the style of The Wedding Singer (but not from The Wedding Singer), sung with appropriate characterisation.
A song of your choice that shows off the best aspects of your voice.
The video does not have to be edited together. They can be separate videos or one single video.
Please make sure to include all the elements listed and have fun.
Auditionees will be contacted and a second round of call back auditions will be arranged for those required.
A dance audition will be required at this point. These auditions will be held in person and location, dates and times are to be confirmed.
Auditions can be submitted via the link below.
No roles have been precast.
IMPORTANT: Those with limited musical theatre/theatre experience are encouraged to audition.
We are fairly new at musical theatre as a company too!
AUDITION SUBMISSIONS CLOSE MAY 16 2021.
All cast must be aged a minimum of 16 years at the time of audition. For cast aged 18 or over at the time of audition, a Working With Children Check or equivalent (i.e VIT Registration) will be required (or proof of application). A WWCC can be obtained at When asked to select the type of check, please select a Volunteer Check. Any cast who turn 18 during the rehearsal period will be required to obtain a WWCC at this time.
Show fees for The Wedding Singer production will be $150. This includes use of hired scripts and vocal books at rehearsals. Printed scripts will be at the cost of the cast member and information on that will be provided. All payments will be due by 30 June 2021 unless otherwise arranged. Electronic banking details will be provided to the cast.
We are looking into organising a production camp. More information will be provided. Fees will applied if this goes ahead.
All cast and crew 18 years and over will be required to have a WWCC (volunteers is fine). We will assist with the application of this should you not already have a valid card.
Rehearsals will be held in a variety of locations in the City of Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia Shire areas. Some of these locations will be private homes of production team members and The Drum Theatre. Rehearsals will take place on Monday evenings and some Saturdays or Sundays (dates to be provided when confirmed with venue) starting late May/early June. Rehearsal schedules will be made available at regular intervals throughout the rehearsal period. Some weeks not all cast members will be required.
Commitment to Rehearsals
It is an expectation that cast members will be available for all rehearsals. However, we do understand that, on occasion, cast members will need to miss a rehearsal due to illness or a family/work commitment. It is an expectation that all auditionees are not involved in any other shows that will cause them to miss rehearsals.
Multiple absences from rehearsals will cause the cast member to be removed from the show and their role recast. This will occur at the discretion of the production team and the Escapees Theatre Company Company Directors.
All cast members are strongly encouraged to participate in an offstage area i.e. costumes, makeup, set, props.

The lead singer of a band. Handsome and charismatic. A truly 'nice' guy that has the classic lead singer aura and personality. Also a bit of a dreamer. In love with love until Linda leaves him at the altar and breaks his heart.
Vocal range: B3 to C6.
The bass player in the wedding band and one of Robbie's best friends. A total guy's guy, but beneath his pretending to love being a bachelor he is actually in love with Holly.
Vocal range: C4 to A5
The wedding band's keyboardist and one of Robbie's best friends. He is sensitive and somewhat flamboyant. The foil to Sammy's super guy attitude.
Vocal range: C4 to A5
Waitress. The pretty "girl next door" in looks and personality. Engaged to Glen but falls in love with Robbie and is conflicted as to who to choose. Empathetic, caring, and brave.
Vocal range: G3 to F5
Julia's cousin. Sexually promiscuous and always up for a good time, but wants to be loved and is looking for romantic fulfillment in all the wrong places. She is in love with Sammy.
Vocal range: A3 to E5
Julia's fiancé. A Wall Street broker. He is rich, shallow, and materialistic. Constantly tries to buy Julia's love with money. He is a bit of a womanizer.
Vocal range: D4 to B5
Robbie's grandmother who raised him. Motherly but adventurous and always trying to remain "hip" despite her age.
Vocal range: D4 to C5
Robbie's fiancé who leaves him at the altar. Keeps Robbie around as a back-up plan. Is more in love with the idea of Robbie being a rock star than she actually is with Robbie.
Vocal range: A3 to D5

David Fonda - drunk brother of the groom at the first wedding; gives worst speech ever

Angie - Julia’s mum. Divorced and still bitter about it.

Donatella & Shane McDonnough - bride and groom at the second (disastrous) wedding. Donatella speaks in an obnoxious baby-talk voice.
